Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1/3 cup plain non-fat yogurt or sour cream
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup buttermilk
About 18 chopped up maraschino cherries (more or less to your preference)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 tablespoons maraschino cherry juice
Optional: 1 drop of red food coloring
Set your oven to 350 F.
Start by combining your oil, sour cream (or yogurt), egg, and granulated sugar. Whisk together, and then add your cherry juice, vanilla extract, and red food color.
Then, toss in your chopped cherries, and give that a quick mix.
In the same bowl, add your flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder. Then pour in the buttermilk.
Whisk until the dry ingredients have just been combined (no need to continue mixing when the powder is no longer visible).
With a greased donut pan, pipe or spoon in your batter, filling only 1/3 of the space in the mold.
Bake for 10 minutes, and allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before grabbing them out.
You can either make a glaze (powdered sugar, sprinkle of salt, vanilla extract, and a dash of milk) *or* use butter to lightly coat the surface to then stick to a cinnamon sugar mixture. This part is up to you! :)
I hope you enjoy.
