COMFORT FOOD: Harvest Cafe in Inman, Kansas

Road-tripping through the Heartland can be worth it for the homemade food at these small-town Kansas cafes. Today, I am here with my mother Carla Marie. My background on my mom's side is Mennonite. My ancestors, great-grandparents Aganetha and Peter, were from a German-speaking settlement in the Molochna region of Ukraine. They migrated from Ukraine/Russia to America in 1874 to start a new life of religious freedom with their families to farm in the Inman area. That's why this area is meaningful for me. There really are a lot of Mennonites in Kansas. And I enjoy the food! The Harvest Cafe in the small town of Inman has a special area on their menu for this type of food. Polly has been the waitress there for over 20 years. We entered the restaurant after the lunch crowd had left, between 1pm and 2pm. They close at 2pm, but if you are eating then you can stay and eat until you are finished. One of the favorite dishes is the vareniki, a dumpling -- usually filled with cheese and topped with a cream gravy. People drive from all the towns around so they can order it. The vareniki is one of Ukraine's staple foods. They also make other old Mennonite desserts, New Year's cookies & cherry moos. I grew up having these foods from my grandmother (Marie). Harvest Cafe, is famous for their daily lunch specials, the chicken fried steak (also known as country fried steak), and the most incredible Midwestern homemade pies you can imagine -- such as raisin cream pie, peanut butter cream, pecan pie, sour cherry pie, rhubarb pie, apple pie, etc.. Inman is located in McPherson County, about half way between McPherson and Hutchinson, and an hour from Wichita. When you travel through Kansas, you can find plenty of small town cafes with homemade food. I hope you enjoy this travel vlog. Love to small town Kansas. ❀ Where we ate: Inman Harvest Cafe 112 S Main St, Inman, KS 67546 (620) 585-6925 https://maps.app.goo.gl The music is a cover of the Dwight Yoakam song Ain't That Lonely Yet.
